Since the founding of Singapore in 1819, there is vigorous development of the trade and transport industry, which led to the founding of many transport companies. There were a few smaller companies (Chuan Pu Company泉晋运输, Seng Hong Company成丰运输, and Joo Hup Company裕合运输, etc) then taking the initiative to form an association to represent the land transport industry. With the goal of forging trade ties and generating business opportunities, as well as being an entity to seek benefits, and raise concerns with the government, these few smaller companies then decided to form the Singapore Lorry Owners Association, located at 11 New Bridge Road, Singapore 059383 on the 31 August 1937, with M/S Joo Hup Company (裕合运输) taking the helm as first Chairman of the association. In 1997, because of redevelopment of the building site at New Bridge Road, there is a need to relocate temporarily to 25 Lor 27A Geylang Road, Singapore 388114.

There was much inconvenience felt amongst the members of the association with regards to the use of other people’s office, and there is a felt need to have our own premises. And therefore a fund raising activity was launched during the Annual General Meeting to get funding to purchase our own office premises. We are fortunate to get good sponsors that contributed much to the funds. Goldbell Engineering Pte Ltd donated $60,000; the Chairman at that time Mr. Lim Quee Huat (Allied Container Services Pte Ltd) donated $20,000, and there were many other monetary contributions from the committee members and the members.

Finally in 1999, STA purchased the premises located in the 3rd Level of 49B Guillemard Road, Singapore 399704 for $420,000. After 50 glorious years of the association, there is a new generation arising that have new mindset and ideas that will spur the growth of the association. Mr. Ng Boon Hong, who was then the Hon. Secretary of STA, formed up a sub-committee that discussed on the need to reinvent a new name for the association, and the end result was the Singapore Transport Association (新加坡运输业公会), that was approved during the Annual General Meeting in 2003.It is hoped that the new committee will take this name globally.
